Why we think cycling is so fab!

Starting tomorrow, for 1 week, it’s “Bike Week” in the UK. This awareness day has been celebrated for 95 years now, and it has been their mission to “show people that not only is there a bike for everyone, but that cycling is for everyone too!”

So why take up cycling we hear you ask? Well, according to the NHS, regular cycling can “reduce the risk of chronic illnesses such as heart disease, type 2 diabetes and strokes as well as helping to keep your weight under control.” It is also thought to hold back ageing and keeps the immune system young…….what’s not to love about that!

And of course there’s the mental health benefits of exercising too to think about…..cycling is a great way to improve the mood, clear the mind and make you feel more refreshed. And if you’ve got a clearer mind, then you’re going to be able to focus and concentrate better at work, you’re going to be more productive, more positive and more energised.

You can cycle to work, you can cycle for fitness, you can cycle for fun with the family, there’s plenty of amazing places in Leeds that you can cycle – are you taking advantage of them? Not only is cycling fantastic for the environment (no nasty fumes), is FREE to do (no travel costs) and good fun, but it’s also excellent for your body and mind too.

Our office is right on the canal and the Canal & River Trust in Leeds encourage cycling down the canals & rivers, and claim they are one of the best routes to take. Cycling down the river or canal can ensure that you benefit from no traffic jams or road rage, and you won’t be breathing in any nasty traffic fumes either!

There’s so many fantastic cycle routes in and around Yorkshire – after all we’ve hosted the Tour de Yorkshire here again this year – if it’s good enough for them then it’s certainly good enough for us! We are surrounded with such beautiful scenery, what an excellent way of seeing it from the seat of your bike?!

Rachel, in our Finance Team, cycles regularly with “Queensbury Queens of the Mountain” which is a cycling club for women of Queensbury & surrounding areas of West Yorkshire. Their mission is to encourage women to see that sport is for everyone & a viable career should they choose it – what a fantastic cause! They are always entering team cycling challenges – in fact they’ve got their first ever time trial event this weekend – 10 miles of super-fast cycling against the clock. And on the 5th August they are doing the Yorkshire Lass Sportive – a 60 mile challenge all in aid of Women v Cancer!

So has this made you want to blow the dust off that bike and go for a cycle? It certainly has us! Bike Week invites you to grab your helmet, gather up your friends and family and rediscover how much enjoyment and enrichment cycling can bring…..so go out there and have fun!
